Dimmitt Family

  Also spelled: Demitt, Demmitt  
Maryland was established with religious freedom for Catholics. The colonial economy was based on tobacco cultivated by Africans who had been enslaved.

James Dimmitt was born about 1707 in Baltimore County, Maryland.

He married Barbara Broad.

John Broad Dimmitt (1736),
Athaliah Dimmitt (1737, married Broad Cole),
Elizabeth Ann Dimmitt (1740, married Zachariah Cross),
Mary Dimmit (1744, married Ashael Cross),
Barbara Dimmitt, and
James Dimmitt, Jr. (1747).

In 1765 James and Barbara moved to Rowan County, North Carolina.

James died about 1774.

American colonists continued to use British monetary units, namely the pound, shilling and pence for which £1 (or li) equalled 20s and 1s equalled 12d. In 1792 the dollar was established as the basic unit of currency.

Dimmitt James s. of William (5), was b. c.1707; age 60 in 1767 when he was stated to have gone to Carolina;
m. Barbara Broad on 27 March 1733;
in 1742 leased 200 a. of Gunpowder Manor for the lifetimes of himself,
Athaliah, b. c.1738, and Elizabeth, b. c.1740; in July 1761 was conv. the right to 10 a. of Dimmitt's Delight and 160 a. Addition to Dimmitt's Delight by William Dimmitt who was a son of William;
by Aug. 1765 he was in Leesburg, Va., when he and his wife Barbara assigned a lease to William Lux; had iss.:
Mary b. 29 Dec. 1734, d. Jan. 1743;
Athaliah, b. 21 Feb. 1738;
Elizabeth Ann, b. 26 Aug. 1740;
Mary, b. Dec. 1744;
James, b. 17 Feb. 1748.
